Memphis Mod: 1970s-Era Time Capsule Home Sparks a Slew of Offers

Within a matter of hours, offers came in for a 1970s-era time capsule in Memphis, TN.
“Although it was built half a century ago, it’s exactly what people seem to be looking for today,” says listing agent Barbie Dan, with Ware Jones Realtors. “Most people that looked at it really saw the beauty of the simplicity.”
The well-maintained home hit the market in early April, with a list price of $575,000 and is pending sale.

“I put it on the market maybe at 8:30 in the morning on a Monday, and people started making appointments immediately,” Dan says. “That first evening, we had three offers. … People were really fighting over this home, which was really special.”
The house is set on a little more than an acre and was built by architect Jimmy Lindy. The impressively preserved space had only one owner.
“From what I understand, it was the first home that [Lindy] designed, and we were able to get all the original architectural plans,” Dan explains. “It’s perfect for someone [like the owners], who just wanted to be one with nature.”

The home has four bedrooms, four baths, and many original features, including slate in the entry, walls of glass, and a dual-sided fireplace.
Dan notes that the home’s owners left all of its ’70s design details intact over the years.
“It has the original Geneva kitchen cabinets, which are metal cabinets and were very popular in that era,” she says. “People still love them for their historic value, plus they’re really good cabinets.”
Dan acknowledges the house needs a bit of work. For example, the baths are original. But overall, the home is in good condition.
The furnishings are not included in the listing and will be sold at an estate sale.

The owners’ three children, who are now in their 60s, were all raised here. The seller is in her 80s and has continued living in the home since her husband’s death a few years ago.
“They loved the house, and they just enjoyed living there,” Dan says.
Dan lives near the home and had noticed its unusual exterior, as it is one of just a few contemporary-style dwellings on the street.
“When I walked in, it almost took my breath away,” she says. “The living room has just soaring ceilings and floor-to-ceiling windows. … I knew that there would be someone out there that would absolutely love it.”
